Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison, founders of fashion catering company Tart London
When did you discover your love of food?
As children – we have both always been rather greedy. We learned to cook from our mothers at a young age, and food has always been a passion. Although we both started off slightly differently: Jemima was adventurous, with many exciting restaurants on the doorstep, living in Toronto and London – her favourite treat as a child was spicy gyozas, whereas Lucy’s was chocolate, biscuits and roast chicken.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your career?
This could be a neverending list – one of the most is dealing with panicked situations (almost on a daily basis when catering for fashion), looking calm and coming up with a very quick solution.
Organisation is instrumental (something that does not come naturally to either of us). How to actually run a business. Delegation and learning from your mistakes, taking a deep breath and moving on.
What’s your proudest professional achievement?
Signing the lease for Tart at Eccleston Place! Onwards and upwards
If you could give a piece of advice to your 16-year-old self, what would it be?
Go for it, life is too short.
What women do you look up to / have inspired you?
We are inspired daily by our superheroes – Skye Gyngell, Diana Henry, Jane Grigson, Lucy Boyd, Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers, Gabrielle Hamilton, Donna Hay, Nancy Silverton, Ana Ros, Angela Hartnett.
Finally, you’re soon to open your first permanent restaurant space in Eccleston Place. Why did you choose this area and what do you like about it?
It was the amazing space that first caught our eye, it is dramatic, beautiful and unexpected.
We are thrilled to be a part of the Eccleston Yards development, it has been done very well and feels incredibly exciting – there is a great buzz in the air. The area needed this, we want to become a real neighbourhood go-to, as well as a destination, especially with the all-day brunch at the weekends!
Tart London at Eccleston Place opens Summer 2018. The new book, ‘A Love of Eating: Recipes by Tart London’ is released on 12th April.
